Klaviyo Customer Intelligence & Behavioral Segmentation

Most eCommerce stores treat newsletter subscribers as a monolithic list. ShopGuide connects what happens in the chat and on your storefront with your Klaviyo account, so your email and SMS flows can build on it.

Behavioral enrichment is not available to all merchants

ShopGuide can infer a persona, journey archetype, dietary tags and a bulk-buyer flag for a customer and write them to Klaviyo profiles (sg_persona, sg_journey_archetype, sg_dietary_tags, sg_bulk_buyer, sg_top_category), together with the chat intent and hesitation. This is switched off for most stores while a store-aware version is built, because the first version's keyword rules produced wrong labels on stores outside the catalog it was written for. If you connect Klaviyo today, expect the features below, not the inferred profile properties. The ShopGuide Order Attributed event, which carries those properties, is sent only for stores where enrichment is enabled.

What works with Klaviyo today

Newsletter signup from the chat

When a shopper gives their email to the AI Shopping Guide, ShopGuide subscribes them to the Klaviyo list you choose. Before subscribing, the AI checks whether the email is already subscribed with consent. If it is, the AI tells the shopper so and does not promise a new welcome code. If you set a Newsletter Signup Reward, the AI mentions it after a successful signup, and your own Klaviyo welcome flow sends the actual code.

Recognising shoppers who click your Klaviyo emails

When a visitor lands on your store from one of your Klaviyo emails, ShopGuide reads Klaviyo's _kx link parameter (or the __kla_id cookie) and looks up the profile with your own key, so chats and visits are linked to the right customer. This needs Profiles: Read on your key. Only visits that were already tracked (with analytics consent) are matched, and a logged-in customer's identity is never overwritten.

Post-purchase NPS event

Event NameWhen It FiresKey Payload Data
ShopGuide NPS SubmittedCustomer completes the post-purchase NPS survey.order_id, score_q1, score_q2, category (Promoter/Passive/Detractor), comment

The same survey also writes NPS properties on the profile (sg_nps_score, sg_nps_chat_score, sg_nps_category, sg_nps_comment).

You can build a flow on it, for example a Promoter VIP flow: trigger on the metric ShopGuide NPS Submitted where category = Promoter, and reward top fans with early access, a referral invitation or a request for a video review.

Enrichment events (stores with enrichment enabled only)

For stores where customer enrichment is enabled, ShopGuide Order Attributed fires when a purchase is attributed to the chat. Its payload carries order_id, order_number, total_price, currency, persona, journey_archetype, top_category, dietary_tags, bulk_buyer, chat_assisted and line_items_count. The persona, tag and archetype fields are empty or missing for other stores.

Adding Customer Segments to Klaviyo

Path Explorer's Customer Segments can go straight into your Klaviyo account. This needs the Klaviyo integration set up below, including a Newsletter List.

  • On most segments the button is Sync to Klaviyo. On the Cart abandoners card it is Add to win-back list.
  • ShopGuide asks you to confirm first, then adds the reachable profiles (shoppers whose session is linked to an email) to your Newsletter List in batches of 500. You see live progress and a summary at the end.
  • It adds people to your list. ShopGuide does not send any email or start a cart-recovery flow. A flow you have set up in Klaviyo for people added to the list can still run. You decide what to send, for example a win-back campaign to that list. One run adds up to 10,000 profiles.
  • If something goes wrong, the error appears in a banner on the page.

See Path Explorer for how the segments are built. Segment syncs include the inferred profile properties only for stores where enrichment is enabled (see the note at the top).

Cart recovery emails (not switched on yet)

ShopGuide can also send a ShopGuide Cart Abandoned event to Klaviyo for chat shoppers who reached the cart and left, so a Klaviyo flow can email them. This is not switched on yet for stores in general; ask ShopGuide if you want it. Until then, use Add to win-back list above.

Setting Up the Klaviyo Integration

  1. In your Shopify Admin, open ShopGuide → Settings → Integrations.
  2. Open the Klaviyo card. ShopGuide suggests it under "Looks like you use these" when it detects Klaviyo on your storefront (detection is best-effort).
  3. Enter your Klaviyo API Token. Give the key access to profiles (read and write), events and lists, including Profiles: Read for email-click recognition.
  4. Choose your Newsletter List.
  5. Optionally set Newsletter Signup Reward (optional): enter an amount such as 10% or $5, not a discount code. Your Klaviyo welcome flow emails the code. Leave it empty and the AI simply confirms the signup.
  6. Save your settings.
